Here is the process to switch between Relative and Absolute Mode on KeyLab controllers:
- Power on the KeyLab.
- Press the "Edit" button.
- Press the "Global" button located in the "Edit Parameters/Snapshots - Switches" section.
- Turn the "Param/Category" Knob until you see: Param: "KnobMode".
- Turn the "Preset/Value" Knob to select the desired setting: "Absolute" or "Relative".
- Press the "Preset/Value" Knob to confirm.
- Press the "Edit" button to exit the "Edit Mode".
To make sure your result is correct, please refer to the information below:
Absolute Mode: If you turn the "CutOff" Knob, you should see VAL Parameter values increasing or decreasing from 000 to 127.
Relative Mode: If you turn the "CutOff" Knob, you should see "VAL" Parameter values increasing or decreasing from 061 to 067.
On the KeyLab Essential Product range, in order to adjust such kind of settings, you'll have to imperatively use the Midi Control Center accessible below:
- Power on the KeyLab.
- Select the "User" device memory you'd like to edit by pressing "User", using the Jog wheel to select the desired memory and then by pressing on the wheel to validate.
- Now hold the "User" button pressed for a few seconds to see the "User preset Edit" message displayed on the screen.
- Press the Key with the "Global" blue labelling above it to access the "Global Settings" page.
- Move the Encoder/Knob you'd like to adjust and then browse the different settings with the Jog Wheel to reach "Option".
- Press the Jog wheel to edit the value, move the wheel to select the desired setting and press the wheel once again to confirm.
- Finally, press the "User" button and the wheel three consecutive times for the value to be saved.
Depending on the relative mode used, the values sent and the reference value will vary depending on the DAW or software used. The expected values may also differ.
Our Controllers are handling 3 different Relative modes described below:
Relative 1 : The knob will send values 61-63 when turned in a negative direction and values 65-67 when turned in a positive direction. The turn speed determines the parameter response.
Relative 2 : The knob will send values 125-127 when turned in a negative direction and values 1-3 when turned in a positive direction. The turn speed determines the parameter response.
Relative 3 : The knob will send values 13-15 when turned in a negative direction and values 17-19 when turned in a positive direction. The turn speed determines the parameter response.
Please note that a "0" value will be sent between each steps.
In relative mode 1, moving (slowly) right will send 65/64/65/64/65 etc... This addition of this "0" value has been made to prevent browsing issues in Ableton Live.
This parameter was called "knob fix" in Midi Control Center, but has been hard implemented in the last firmware versions.
Indeed, all these settings on the KeyLab 25/49/61/88 & MKII 49/61/88 can also be adjusted directly through the Midi Control Center which you can download from this page:
