Phase distortion synthesis was developed by Casio during the 1980's.
Phase distortion synthesis outputs sound through the Carrier oscillator, by scanning a sine wave period on a table.
While this is happening, a second oscillator called the Modulator will modulate the carrier. The modulator is a compound of two periods, with each period having its own waveform.
When applying some DCW (Digitally controlled Waveshaping), the Modulator will dynamically change the rate at which the Carrier table is scanned to distort the phase of the carrier.
The two modulator periods and the amount of DCW applied
The result of the DCW applied on the carrier.
To summarise, when the wave table is scanned at a constant rate (No DCW applied), the output is a simple sine wave, without overtones.
When the scan rate is not constant (DCW applied), the phase gets distorted, creating new wave shapes.
The CS V sound generator is split in two parts, Line 1 and Line 2.
Each Line represents an independent voice with its dedicated pitch, amplitude and DCW envelope. The LINE SELECT button lets you choose between four different play modes.
Line 1
In this mode the Line 1 plays alone.
Line 2
In this mode the Line 2 plays alone.
Line 1+2’
Both Lines can play simultaneously.
The Line 2 can modulate the Line 1, and can be detuned from the frequency of Line 1 using the Detune settings.
Line 1+1’
Creates a duplicate of Line 1 that can modulate the Line 1 and can be detuned, while sharing the same waveform and envelopes.
CZ Envelope
CZ is the envelope used in the original Casio CZ series.
It offers up to 8 points.
DADSR Envelope
DADSR reproduces a standard Delay, Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release envelope.
MSEG Envelope
MSEG is Arturia’s multiple-segment envelope with up to 16 points, adjustable slope curves, and sync capability.
This lets you create brand new modulation sources from your existing modulations.
